The Rivette QUESTars Adventure Race Series

Questars 360

Thames Ridgeway Challenge

Event Details

The Questars 360 Thames Ridgeway Challenge is an epic endurance event which links together two of the best long-distance trails in this part of the country to form a classic circular route that will see you...

+ Run / trek along the Thames Path

+ Kayak down the River Thames - England's longest river

+ Cycle along the Ridgeway - Britain's oldest road - for one of the longest off road rides in the country!

Ideally suited to teams of 2 and 4 people, you choose whether to do the challenge non-stop in 24 hrs or split it in two and take an overnight stop. The event takes place on the weekend of Saturday 23 & Sunday 24 June 2018 to benefit from the long hours of daylight.

Places are strictly limited by the number of kayaks available and the number of bikes that can be transported, so early entry is strongly recommended to avoid missing out.

Special Note

This is is a tough endurance challenge. Do not underestimate it!

The terrain may not be mountainous but this is more than made up for by the distance which is the adventure racing equivalent of doing more than an Ironman Triathlon - offroad! That said you don't need to be super fit to complete it - you just need to be able to keep moving at a steady pace.

You have a maximum of 36 hours to complete the challenge so the slower you are the less time you will have to take an overnight break. In 2016 most teams were on the go for up to 18 hours on the Saturday and 9 hours on the Sunday leaving 6-8 hours for an overnight break.

Cushioned backrests for the sit-on-top kayaks are highly recommended. You can provide your own or you can hire the same as or equivalent to these as an optional extra for just £15 if you would like the added comfort and support that these provide.

Bikes need to be suitable for off-road use i.e. have knobbly off-road tyres. Mountain bikes are therefore recommended.

You can hire a mountain bike for this event from Cyclexperience who will deliver it to and collect it from the event base. Let us know when you enter if you need to hire a bike and we'll send you the details.

Bikes will be stood up against each other using the same method that Cyclexperience use to transport their own hire bikes around the country.

All bikes will be handled with care and treated the same as if they were our own but please be aware that they might move in transit. If you are worried about your bike / frame being marked, it is your responsibility to ensure it is adequately packaged and protected for transportation.

Bike bags / boxes aren't necessary but if you plan on putting your bike in one for transportation please let us know at least one month before the event. We will only transport pre-arranged standard size (i.e. wheels off inside) bike bag / boxes.

Two-person sit-on-top kayaks are provided. If you wish to use your own tandem kayak that's fine BUT please note it is your responsibilty to arrange for it to be taken to the launch point and collected from the egress point. We are unable to transport any kayaks other than our own sit-on-tops.

Paddles & buoyancy aids are also provided. You can use your own paddle / buoyancy aid if you prefer. We can transport all paddles & buoyancy aids.

You must have kayaked before and know what you are doing otherwise you will struggle. You need to be confident getting on and off the water. If in doubt do a one-day adventure race and see how you get on.

Some teams may end up finishing the kayaking in the dark.
